When to Visit Morocco

The spring months of March, April and May are one of the best times to visit Morocco due to the warm weather and sunny days, and it is also a beautiful time of year where wildflowers carpet the landscape and vegetation is lush after the winter rain. The temperatures start to rise in March and by April spring is in full swing with pleasant weather and longer days. The months of April and May are great for hiking in the High Atlas, exploring Morocco’s bustling cities and venturing into the Sahara before the intense summer heat hits. April and May can be busy to booking in advance is advised.

June marks the start of summer and whilst it can be very hot it is slightly cooler than July and August. Coastal regions such as Essaouira and Tangier are good options for June due to the sea breeze and it tends to be the last month to visit the desert before the unbearable heat hits. Temperatures soar in July and August and can often reach 40°C. The further inland you go the hotter it becomes and cities such as Marrakech, Fes and Meknes can be stifling so if you decide to visit Morocco during the peak summer months it is best to stick to the coastline or Atlas Mountains.

As the scorching summer heat subsides, September is one of the best months to visit Morocco. Boasting pleasant temperatures and clear sunny days it is a great time for hiking in the Mid and High Atlas Mountains, exploring the ancient ruins of Volubilis and meandering through Chefchaouen’s blue streets. Pleasant weather continues into October and whist it becomes windy along the coast, it is a great time to immerse yourself in the colour and charisma of Morocco's interior. November sees some cooler weather and lower visitor numbers so can be a great time to visit.

The winter months between December and February can be a good time to visit Morocco, especially if you prefer lower crowds and milder weather. During this time of year, the major tourist cities including Marrakech, Fes and Chefcahouen have a lot less footfall so you can enjoy exploring the souks and sites of Morocco relatively crowd-free. Increased rainfall should be expected in the second half of January, but it subsides in February which also sees warmer temperatures. The winter is also a great time to visit the desert but it can get very cold at night so packing extra layers is highly recommended.
