With a shared border and common heritage, a short visit to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu can easily be incorporated into any tour of northern India. One of the great cities of the subcontinent, Kathmandu is the gateway to the valley of the same name which is home to the historic capitals of Bhaktapur and Patan and the UNESCO protected temple of Changu Narayan. With the remainder of time spent within Kathmandu, highlights include 2,500 year old Swayambhunath Stupa, the Lamaist shrine of Bodhnath, old Kathmandu's Durbar Square and the Shiva shrine of Pashupatinath.

Itinerary Highlights
Located to the east of Kathmandu, the ancient Hindu temple of Changu Narayan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is known for its detailed carvings and sculptures.
The sacred Shiva shrine of Pashupatinath lines the banks of the Bagmati River. Pashupatinath is a major pilgrimage centre and the site of the Royal Cremation Ghats.
Bhaktapur was once the capital of the Kathmandu Valley and this charming Newari town is a fascinating place to explore. Highlights include Durbar Square and the Nayatpola Temple.
