From the majestic Andes to the ancient cultures which have marked this land, Peru has something for everyone. Lima is a cosmopolitan capital bustling with modern life whilst the jungles of the Amazon River capture the imagination with teeming birdlife, flora and fauna including the elusive jaguar. In the south, experience the blue waters of Lake Titicaca home to indigenous Indian cultures that continue to practice an ancient way of life, speculate on the baffling Nazca Lines, see the ancient building techniques of previous civilizations and enjoy the impressive Spanish colonial architecture of Cusco. Of course, no tour to Peru is complete without following the Inca Trail to enigmatic Machu Picchu nestled high amongst the clouds – a fitting climax to this most marvellous country. Pettitts Travel have led the way in designing tailor-made holidays and tours to Peru for over 30 years.

Places to visit in Peru

Immerse yourself in the ancient beauty of Peru and you will find yourself feeling close to its fascinating past. Visit Lima’s excellent museums, experience the peace of Lake Titicaca or hike to indigenous mountain villages that still follow many of the country’s ancient traditions. Machu Picchu is synonymous with Peru, yet for many the journey getting there along the Inca Trail is just as powerful as the breathtaking views once you reach the site. Cusco, surrounded by the craggy peaks of the Andes offers a rich cultural mix, lively markets and a number of nearby Inca remains. The Peruvian Amazon makes up two-thirds of the country and is a tropical haven for rare wildlife including the elusive jaguar. From the cobbled streets of picturesque Arequipa in the south, delve into the wilderness of the Colca Canyon then explore the floating islands of Lake Titicaca and the pre-Inca ruins at Sillustani.

When to Visit peru

The weather in Peru varies from region to region given the long coastline and dramatic changes in altitude and topography. Due to this Peru can visited the year round although this is dependent on what you wish to see. Coastal areas, including Lima, enjoy plentiful sunshine and warm temperatures year round. That said, during the winter months of June to September, this region can become overcast and see some rainfall. The winter, from April to September, is the best time to visit the Peruvian Andes, Cusco and Machu Picchu. At this time of year the days are clear and warm and the nights will be crisp and cold. Most rainfall here falls between December and March. The Peruvian rainforest has a temperate, subtropical climate with rainfall throughout the year whilst the far north is also warm year round with temperatures touching 35°C during the summer months.

Peru Holiday Review

We are safely back from Peru and our minds have been blown by this amazing country. Despite our fatigue every part of the journey brought us such extraordinary places to see that it is only now that we need to take time to recover and appreciate all that we have seen.

Accommodation in Peru

Peru has a wide range of hotel accommodation throughout the country which, on the whole, is of a very high standard. Capital Lima and the Andean town of Cusco in particular have a huge variety of options from modern resorts and smaller luxury boutique properties to simpler locally owned hotels. There are some excellent lodges in the Peruvian Amazon and pretty Andean style properties in Arequipa and Colca. There is also a fabulous Belmond property at the entrance to Machu Picchu. For those of a more energetic nature that wish to reach Machu Picchu on foot, undertake the Salkantay Route staying in the luxurious lodge accommodation of Mountain Lodges of Peru along the way.
