Romania Holidays

Cultured and friendly, home to charming medieval towns and unspoiled countryside, monumental castles and a spirited capital, Romania is a welcoming year-round destination. Decades behind the Iron Curtain has resulted in many of the regions retaining the character of a pre-industrial Europe that is fast disappearing elsewhere on the continent and it is this heritage which is the country’s biggest draw. Transylvania conjures images of Dracula and grand gothic castles, however, this region offers much more than these myths with picturesque villages, fortified churches and bucolic beauty. The rugged Carpathian Mountains slice through the heart of the country. This is Romania at its wildest and the snow-capped peaks and thick forest shelter brown bear, wolf, wild boar and lynx. Travel north to Moldavia, home to remote settlements, tranquil valleys, rich folklore and the world-renowned painted monasteries of Bucovina or, for a contrasting experience, visit the internationally important Danube Delta wetlands that are home to over 300 species of bird.

Places to visit in Romania

Bucharest is Romania’s dynamic capital and home to the largest parliament building in Europe. If it is your first time visiting Romania, you might choose to explore the quaint towns, religious sites and beautiful countryside of Transylvania. In Brasov admire the Saxon heritage and gothic churches, hear tales about the legend of Dracula in the medieval town of Sighisoara and follow cobbled streets in Cluj-Napoca that lead you to time-worn buildings and charming courtyards. If you have a special interest in religious sites or simply wish to experience rural Romania then journey through Bucovina and Moldavia to admire the exquisite frescoes of the region’s painted churches and monasteries. Wildlife enthusiasts may also wish to spend a few days following the maze of canals and tree-fringed lakes of the Danube Delta.

When to Visit romania

Romania is a year-round destination but it is generally accepted that the best time to visit the country is from late April to early July and from late August until the end of October. During this period temperatures tend to be comfortable and the weather mild. Due to its continental climate summer months can be hot in Romania, especially in the south, which includes Bucharest. Likewise, winters are particularly cold and the country can experience snowfall anytime from December until early April depending on the location. There is rainfall throughout the year but spring and autumn tend to remain dry with winters wetter and the occasional shower possible over summer.

Accommodation in Romania

The most typical types of accommodation in Romania are hotels and bed and breakfasts. Lower end hotels are reasonably priced in relation to other western and European countries whilst 4 and 5-star options are comparable in price and quality. Some hotels include breakfast in their rates but others will offer it as an extra cost. Boutique hotels are available, but only in Bucharest and Transylvania. In most cases bed and breakfasts may be the only option in small towns or villages and although sometimes simpler remain an excellent option for those seeking a quieter, more authentic and traditional style of accommodation.
