When to Visit Romania

March sees the first signs of spring in Romania where the temperatures slowly start to rise across the country. Bucharest averages 9°C but rainfall can be expected throughout the country. The beginning of April sees the temperatures jump further into the early-mid teens and the days become longer and brighter. It is also one of the most beautiful times to visit Romania as meadows and mountains are carpeted with colourful flowers creating stunning backdrops to the country’s dramatic castles and churches. May is one of Romania’s wettest months, but it is a great time of year for birdwatching on the Danube Delta.

Whilst June receives some rain showers it is also a great time to visit Romania, especially for hiking and visiting the country’s monasteries and castles of Transylvania. Temperatures rise to the mid-late twenties in June and continue to rise further in the peak summer months of July and August. For some respite from the strong summer heat, head to Bucovina in the north for cooler temperatures and great sightseeing conditions to see the unique painted monasteries of the region. Or visit the spectacular Sfanta Anna, a crater lake with beautifully clear water and surrounding hot springs and spa towns.

September and October are some of the best months to visit Romania. The intense summer heat has subsided, and temperatures drop to an average of 23°C in September and 14°C in October making it a comfortable time for a cultural tour visiting the painted monasteries of Bucovina and gothic castles of Transylvania. Rainfall also remains low in September, especially in Bucharest and across the Black Sea coast. Romania’s countryside is particularly beautiful in October when the autumn foliage turns the landscape to a fiery crimson and copper. It is also harvesting season with lots of fresh produce such as pumpkins and fruit available at local markets.

Whilst temperatures start to drop in November, it remains a fairly dry and sunny month. Moving into December, the weather turns cold where the temperature can often drop to below freezing, and January and February see the cloud coverage intensify as well as rainfall. Whilst these months offer beautiful wintery landscapes such as snow-capped mountains and frozen lakes, it is quite dark and gloomy and not the best time for photography. If you are looking for an alternative Christmas market destination, Bucharest is a great option as the city comes alive with festive cheer and Constitution Square is dotted with stalls selling locally made gifts.
