Splendours of St Petersburg

5 days from £1640 per person

Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, St Petersburg is arguably the finest city in Russia. Home to fascinating palaces and cathedrals, beautiful bridges over Venice-like canals, spacious squares and wide streets lined by highly decorated baroque and classical buildings, much of the city is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Highlights here include the Hermitage Museum, which houses one of the most magnificent collections of Western European art in the world, the Peter and Paul Fortress, palaces, parks and lakes of Tsarskoe Selo and sumptuous Grand Palace at Peterhof.

Route: St Petersburg

Itinerary Highlights

Russia’s second largest city and cultural capital, St Petersburg is home to the Hermitage, one of the largest museums in the world which has an astonishing collection of art and sculptures.

You’re never too far from water in St Petersburg, a palatial city that can be explored from the comfort of an elegant canal boat tour.

Visit Peterhof Palace, a mesmerising series of opulent palaces and perfectly maintained gardens that was designed by Peter the Great, a noble tsar from the late 17th century

Itinerary: Splendours of St Petersburg

This morning depart the UK on a British Airways flight to St Petersburg. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, beautiful St Petersburg is Russia’s grandest city. With its canals, bridges, opulent palaces, world-class galleries and museums much of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site. At vanguard of Russian history since its inception, St Petersburg is the jewel in the country’s crown. Please note that this itinerary is based on a Friday departure from the UK. (N)

A vast complex of palaces, parks and lakes, the highlight is the Catherine Palace – a vast baroque home designed by Rastrelli and given by Peter the Great to his wife Catherine in the mid-18th century. Returning to St Petersburg, spend the afternoon at the Yusupov Palace – one of the city’s finest. Built during the 1740s, this opulent palace even has its own theatre. It was also in a cellar here that the murder of Rasputin was planned. (B)

Russia Holiday Review

Everything went splendidly many thanks. The three guides - Natalia, Natasha Petrovna and Amelia -  and drivers - Mischa, Nikita and Dmitri - were beyond excellent and the local guides ditto. Both hotels were first class in their different ways and ideally located.
