Eastern Cape Holidays

Nestled between the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal on South Africa’s easterly shores, the Eastern Cape is a diverse region with a rich heritage and the proud birthplace of Nelson Mandela, the first President of the Republic of South Africa. Predominately home to the Xhosa people, the Eastern Cape is known for its protected areas and fantastic game viewing, however, most visitors to the region will likely first experience it when following the Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Explore Tsitsikamma National Park’s rocky coastline and remote mountain range, visit Jeffrey’s Bay for a spot of surfing and fresh seafood or visit Addo National Park, a vast area dedicated to the conservation of elephant and other wildlife. The Eastern Cape is a remarkable region that adds culture and authenticity to a South African adventure.

When to visit Eastern-Cape

Best Times
Good Times

The Eastern Cape in South Africa generally follows the weather of the Western Cape making November to April the best time to visit. Whilst the months of December, January and February offer hot temperatures and long sunny days, it tends to be peak season meaning accommodation is pricier and coastal towns will be noticeably busier. The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, especially the months of November, March and April, are great times to visit the Eastern Cape with warm weather and little rain, creating the perfect conditions for hiking and sightseeing. Springtime is also an excellent time to drive the Garden Route as the wildflowers are in bloom and trees are blossoming. June to November marks the Eastern Cape’s whale watching season as well as winter time. This time of the year brings some showers, wind and cooler temperatures but can be an affordable and pleasant time to visit.

What to do in Eastern Cape

From sweeping beaches and lush tropical forests to vibrant cities and uninhabited desert expanses, South Africa’s Eastern Cape offers a wide range of experiences and places to see. The Eastern Cape is less developed than the neighbouring Western Cape, giving visitors a more authentic South African experience. The region is home to a breathtaking coastline with one highlight being the Tsitsikamma National Park which showcases deep gorges, emerald vegetation and a marine reserve. Here visitors can see the ‘Big Tree’ a towering yellowwood, follow the Mouth Trail which crosses a suspension bridge over Storms River and visit Nature Valley for birdwatching. The Eastern Cape is also known for its excellent wildlife viewing and safari lodges. Some of our favourites include the Kariega or Shamwari Private Game Reserves, both are luxurious and malaria-free safari experiences which combine the Big 5 with birdlife, flora and other fauna, and Addo Elephant Park, a reserve dedicated to the conservation of the elephant. Other highlights include visiting the eclectic city of Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha, taking to the waves in the surf town of Jeffreys Bay or staying at the coastal town of Oyster Bay where you can take part in activities such as a beach dune safari or horse riding.
