From sweeping beaches and lush tropical forests to vibrant cities and uninhabited desert expanses, South Africa’s Eastern Cape offers a wide range of experiences and places to see. The Eastern Cape is less developed than the neighbouring Western Cape, giving visitors a more authentic South African experience. The region is home to a breathtaking coastline with one highlight being the Tsitsikamma National Park which showcases deep gorges, emerald vegetation and a marine reserve. Here visitors can see the ‘Big Tree’ a towering yellowwood, follow the Mouth Trail which crosses a suspension bridge over Storms River and visit Nature Valley for birdwatching. The Eastern Cape is also known for its excellent wildlife viewing and safari lodges. Some of our favourites include the Kariega or Shamwari Private Game Reserves, both are luxurious and malaria-free safari experiences which combine the Big 5 with birdlife, flora and other fauna, and Addo Elephant Park, a reserve dedicated to the conservation of the elephant. Other highlights include visiting the eclectic city of Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha, taking to the waves in the surf town of Jeffreys Bay or staying at the coastal town of Oyster Bay where you can take part in activities such as a beach dune safari or horse riding.
