KwaZulu Natal Holidays

Once home to the mighty Zulu Kingdom, KwaZulu Natal is a compelling region of cultural diversity, rich history and exceptional wildlife encounters all in a breathtakingly beautiful natural setting. Arriving into the energetic coastal city of Durban, head towards the interior and the mighty Drakensburg mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From here you are in easy reach of the historic battlefield sites of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift for a fascinating insight into this period of British colonial expansion into southern Africa. The wildlife reserves of KwaZulu are some of the finest in South Africa with spectacular settings and an almost unrivalled opportunity to see the ‘big 5’. For those seeking relaxation at the end of their holiday, KwaZulu Natal’s long shoreline overlooks the idyllic warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

With a sub-tropical climate, KwaZulu Natal can be visited all year round. The summer months between October and April tend to be hot and humid whereas the winter, from May to September, brings mild and dry conditions. We’d advise that April and May are the best months to visit KwaZulu Natal; expect comfortable temperatures, sunshine and good wildlife viewing. Durban and the coastal region tend to be warm all year round, whereas the further inland you go, the cooler the climate becomes. At an elevation of over 3,000m, the Drakensburg Mountains can receive heavy snowfall during the winter months and be rather cold. If you are visiting the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the peak season lies from December to February, and whilst it is a great time to see the flora and fauna of this wonderful region, accommodation will be at a premium.

What to do in KwaZulu Natal

The coastal city of Durban is the gateway of the KwaZulu Natal province with a well-served flight hub. It is worth spending a few days here exploring the city and surrounding areas. The city’s long seafront promenade is the beating heart of the touristic centre which runs all the way north to Umhlanga, Durban’s premium beach resort home to boutique hotels, excellent restaurants and a beautiful bay. Things to do in Durban include the Botanic Gardens which showcase a huge variety of African plant species, the impressive Moses Mabhida Stadium and several cultural museums including the Phansi Museum. Further inland you will find the breathtaking Drakensburg Mountains which offer a range of hiking trails that lead to spectacular lookout points and caves that are home to pre-historic rock paintings. From here you are in easy reach of the significant historic battlefields of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana which give a deeper insight into the region’s war-torn past. KwaZulu Natal is also known for its fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park located in central KwaZulu Natal is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa which boasts the ‘Big 5’ and is a prime birding destination. To the northeast lies the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a protected area which surrounds the beautiful Lake St. Lucia. Wildlife here includes hippos, crocodiles, flamingos and pelicans.
