From here, you will drive on into the heart of the winelands where you will stay at an authentic and atmospheric guesthouse that offers spectacular views across the majestic wine valley. Moving on, you will visit remote farmsteads in Outdshoorn and explore the picturesque coastline as you traverse along the Garden Route. You’ll arrive at Plettenberg Bay, a delightful seaside town with an impressive mountain backdrop, white sandy beaches and crystal-blue waters. Close by is Tsitsikamma National Park, a haven for bird watching, nature hikes and mesmerising scenery. Your journey takes you on to the exclusive Eastern Cape Game Reserve, Pumba. Spend the last part of your African expedition spotting the ‘Big 5’ and staying in rustic yet luxurious lodge accommodation at this Eco-friendly, malaria-free, private safari. Cape Town is a contrast of landscapes, cultures, cuisines and experiences. Take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain to appreciate the panoramic views across one of Africa’s greatest cities.

As you drive through the verdant winelands region, you’ll reach Franschhoek, where you can step aboard its iconic wine tram and indulge in tasting some of the area’s finest wines.

Spot the famous ‘Big 5’ at a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape; perfectly complimented with fantastic facilities and outdoor braai cooking, the perfect way to end your adventure.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international overnight flight to Cape Town.
On arrival at Cape Town International Airport you will be met by our local representative who will assist you in collecting your hire car. Begin your self-drive adventure by driving to your centrally located hotel in Cape Town (journey time approximately 30 minutes). Cape Town is a top international destination and considered one of the world's most beautiful cities. Spend the rest of today using the hotel’s facilities, or exploring the city at your own leisure. Today you might choose to go in search of some of the iconic attractions in and around Cape Town. Key locations to check out are Robben Island, the icon of struggle in South Africa’s turbulent past, including the prison cell of Nelson Mandela; the Table Mountain Cableway, a rewarding 360° view of the city from 1000m above, where you can also go for a walk, have a bite to eat and enjoy the unique environment. This evening you might choose to head to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, a working harbour, set to a backdrop of sea and mountains which offers a variety of shopping, eating and entertainment options. You’ve got another day to explore this magnificent city. There’s so much to do that you won't have had time to fit it all in yesterday. You might decide to head to Cape Point, stopping off at the iconic viewports and picturesque fishing villages as you take in the sights and sounds along the way. Key places to visit include boulders beach, sailing out to seal island and stopping off at Camps Bay, a wealthy coastal suburb with a palm-fringed, white-sand beach and stylish cafes and bars. Later you might drive up to Signal Hill, where you can take in the breath-taking views over the City, Table Mountain and the gleaming Harbour and Waterfront. (B)

After breakfast this morning you will get in the car and drive east out of the City, passing spectacular mountains and valleys. After an hour of driving you will arrive at Franschhoek, a beautiful town with centuries-old vineyards that give fruit to some of the world’s finest wines. This afternoon you might decide to enjoy a wine tasting and vineyard tour. If you both want to enjoy wine tasting, then why not opt for a bike tour of the vineyards? You’ll learn about the different wines produced in the area, as you sit back and relax amidst the idyllic surroundings and wonderful views. (B)

Today you might choose to step aboard the town’s wine tram a hop-on hop-off tour that takes you through vineyards, scenery and South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine estates. As well, you might choose to head into the heart of the town where you can enjoy the laid-back café culture and distinct French charm. Have a wander around the upmarket shops and or have a bite to eat in one of the contemporary restaurants. (B)

After breakfast today, you will hop back in the car and continue your journey along Route 62, Oudtshoorn bound (journey time approximately 5 hours). Route 62 is justifiably one of the most beautiful drives in South Africa; you’ll pass through vast landscapes, twisting rocky gorges and see jagged peaks on the horizon. Upon arrival in Oudtshoorn, the ‘Ostrich capital of the world’ you might choose to stretch your legs by having a wander around the small town, where the buildings are all made of sandstone rock, or visit a nearby Ostrich farm. Today you might decide to explore the Cango Caves - the drive there is stunning in its own right! The caves offer daily guided tours, or, if you are feeling particularly adventurous, you can delve deep into the underground tunnels, squeezing through narrow chimneys as you move from chamber to chamber. After breakfast today, you will commence your journey to Plettenburg Bay (journey time approximately 3 hours). We recommend stopping off at Knysna, a town that stands out along the Garden Route due to its impressive scenery and tranquil lagoon. Here you can enjoy a spot of lunch at one of the delightful cafes or restaurants situated around the atmospheric harbour. Later on today you will arrive at Plettenberg Bay; settle into your accommodation before you head out to explore. You might decide to take a wander along the jagged cliff tops or soft sandy beaches. If you are lucky, you might spot whales or dolphins offshore (July – November). (B)

Today is free for you to explore Plettenberg Bay at your own pace. You might choose to embark on a cruise around the Featherbed Nature Reserve, where your local guide will be able to inform you about the private reserve and the flora and fauna that can be found here. Alternatively, you might choose to explore Robberg nature reserve, located just 8km from Plettenberg Bay, it is a national monument and World Heritage Site. Highlights here include spotting the rare blue duiker and visiting the Cape Seal lighthouse, which sits 146m about sea level and is regarded the highest light on the South African coastline. (B)

Today is again free for you to explore more of Plettenberg Bay. You might choose to spend the day relaxing on one of the beautiful sandy beaches, or visit the Tistikamma National Park. After breakfast today, you will drive 4 hours to Pumba Private Game Reserve near Grahamstown. Eco friendly Pumba provides an unforgettable game viewing experience. Local residents include the famous ‘Big 5’, plus an incredible array of bird life. Pumba is the Swahili word for ‘warthog’, and many of these amusing little creatures can be found wandering around the bush. After you have settled in to your accommodation, you will head out on your first game drive. Guests of Pumba have the rare opportunity of seeing the majestic White Lion, hunting its prey and snoozing in the afternoon African sun. Once the sun goes down, enjoy a gourmet dinner paired with vintage wines under the African stars. (B/D)
