Central Thailand Holidays

The Kingdom of Thailand stretches from the Laotian border in the far north of the country to the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia at its southern tip. However, it is the central region of Thailand that has the country’s greatest concentration of historic sites, centred around the nation’s vibrant capital city of Bangkok. This heaving, pulsating, colourful metropolis is a destination in itself – a place where grand golden palaces and serene Buddhist temples jostle for space beside street-food vendors and where small boats bobbing on the Chao Phraya River compete with speeding water taxis. Outside of Bangkok is a wealth of historic sites. Travel to Ayutthaya, which was established in the 14th century and became the Siamese capital. Here spend time exploring the ancient ruins then visit nearby Bang Pa-In which was once the summer residence of the Ayutthayan kings. Head west from Bangkok to pretty Amphawa to see the floating markets then continue on to picturesque Kanchanaburi which is the location of the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai. All roads in the east of the region lead to neighbouring Laos with overland routes linking Ubon Ratchathani and Pakse in Laos and Udon Thani with the Laotian capital of Vientiane. Pettitts Travel specialises in providing bespoke tailor-made holidays to Thailand and cultural tours to the region of central Thailand.

With a largely tropical climate, travellers to central Thailand should expect hot and humid conditions throughout the year. There are, however, distinct wet and dry seasons which are only intensified by the appearance of the annual monsoon rains. November to February is the dry season and it is generally considered that this is the best time to visit the region. These months herald the arrival of clear skies with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C during the day and dropping to around 20°C at night. Humidity is also noticeably lower and, although there is always the risk of a shower, rainfall is uncommon. The months of March and April see temperatures steadily rise then, from May, the wet season begins in earnest and lasts until October. This period brings more unpredictable weather, rainfall is frequent with short but heavy downpours, humidity levels increase and temperatures can top 35°C during the daytime.

What to do in Central Thailand

Ancient cities, modern metropolises and gilded temples, opulent palaces and significant ancient remains all framed within a lush tropical landscape – central Thailand is a microcosm of the rest of this rich and vibrant country. At the heart of this region is the Thai capital of Bangkok. A city that offers plenty, two mains highlights include the Reclining Buddha at Wat Po and the spectacular Grand Palace complex which is home to the main royal residence, important ministerial buildings and key temples including Wat Phra Kaeo. Outside of Bangkok head to traditional Amphawa to experience the colourful weekend floating market, the former Siamese capital of Ayutthaya, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Bang Pa-In which was where the Ayutthayan kings once resided. Forever associated with the famous River Kwai which the town straddles, in Kanchanaburi visit the Allied Forces Second World War cemetery, cross the notorious bridge and see 'Hell Fire Pass'. For relaxation at the end of a holiday, the region is well connected by air to all the main Thai islands.
