An enchanting Buddhist kingdom with warm and friendly people, Thailand is an exotic country of timeless tradition, ancient rituals and gracious customs. Starting in bustling Bangkok, explore the majestic temples and floating markets before travelling to the stunning ruins of Thailand's former capital Ayutthaya in the central region. From here fly north to Chiang Rai and the dramatic countryside of the Golden Triangle which borders Laos and Burma for a two night stay at the charming Lanjia Lodge. After visiting the pretty hill town of Chiang Mai end your journey relaxing on the white-sand beaches of Koh Lanta or Krabi.

The Thai capital Bangkok is unlike any other city in the country. Both modern and traditional, a highlight is the gilded Grand Palace of which the royal residence and Wat Phra Kaeo form part.
The Golden Triangle is a hilly region historically known for producing opium. The Ruak River flows into the Mekong River forming boundaries between the countries of Burma, Laos and Thailand.
Chiang Mai is the largest city in northern Thailand and surrounded by country’s highest mountains. The old city dates from 1200 and still has evidence of walls and moats from this time.

Start your private guided tour at the Grand Palace which was built by the early kings of the Chakri dynasty. This huge complex is home to the King’s private residence as well as over fifty temples including Wat Phra Kaeo which houses the thousand-year-old Emerald Buddha. Visit the Reclining Buddha at Wat Po, before exploring the beautiful flower market. Later that afternoon board a private long-tail boat and cruise the winding canals of the Chao Phraya River. End the day at Wat Arun for a panoramic view of the Grand Palace and river. (B/L)

Continue your journey to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya and visit the majestic and famous temples the city has to offer. Get a taste of local life with a visit to a vibrant market and take an interesting walk through the town's Muslim Quarter which offers the opportunity to sample an unusual local delicacy, candy floss roti. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Wat Niwet Thammaprawat, a distinctive Buddhist temple which features remarkable Gothic-style architecture and stained-glass windows. Also see the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace - built in the 1600s as the summer residence for the Royal Family, Bang Pa-In is an impressive collection of gardens and majestic mansions. Although rarely used these days, the palace retains its royal elegance and offers a great opportunity to learn about the Kingdom’s history and culture. (B/D)

After breakfast travel to the traditional, town of Amphawa famed for its authentic floating market. Held on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, these afternoon and evening markets line the canals close to Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram and are popular with local villagers who buy and sell their produce by boat. Stay overnight in Amphawa. (B)

Start your day at the Thai-Burma border at Maw Sai, where you will drive to Baan Pha Mee to visit Wat Prathat Doi Tung, Doi Chang Mub Arboretum and the Doi Tung Palace. After a traditional lunch in a local restaurant discover the Golden Triangle region and visit the Hall of Opium before taking a long-tail boat on the Mekong to the fishing village of Baan Had Bai. This morning walk from the lodge through agricultural farmland, isolated villages and corn fields to a Hmong burial ground. Enjoy spectacular views during the trail and meet farmers who are preparing for a day in the field with their tools and woven backpacks. Later drive to the cultural city of Chiang Mai where you will stay for two nights. Set high valley at the foot of the Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second city. (B)

In the afternoon ascend Doi Suthep and climb the 300 steps to Wat Phrathat, the holiest shrine in northern Thailand, which sits atop the summit. Be inspired by the spectacular views. In the evening join the street vendors, artists and food sellers at the lively night market. (B)
