Southern Thailand, Beaches and Islands Holidays

When most people think of Thailand usually the first image that comes to mind is its islands – a tropical idyll of warm seas, crystal-clear azure waters, sun-kissed sandy beaches and towering jungle-clad limestone cliffs and hills. Most visitors to Thailand travel south at the conclusion of a holiday to stay by the sea at one of the many excellent beach resorts, taking the welcome opportunity to relax and re-charge before their flight home. Koh Samet is the closest island to Bangkok and is a morning’s drive from the capital. The other islands, namely Koh Samui, Krabi and Koh Lanta, Phuket and Khao Lak are a short flight away either from the capital or other regional cities including Chiang Mai. For those interested in wildlife, Khao Sok National Park, which is located close to Phuket, is considered one of Thailand’s finest reserves. The reserve’s lowland jungle supports an astonishing range of fauna, reptile and bird life including elephant, leopard, deer and gibbon and is also the setting for rare species of flora from orchid to the endangered Rafflesia Kerrii. Pettitts Travel specialises in providing bespoke tailor-made holidays to Thailand, wildlife tours to southern Thailand and coastal escapes to Thailand’s islands and beaches.

The weather that occurs on the islands and coastal areas that make up southern Thailand differs depending on whether they are located on the Andaman Coast which occupies the western side of the peninsula or the Gulf of Thailand which borders the eastern coast. Although the variations in the weather can, at first glance, seem slight, understanding the different monsoon patterns will help to influence which island or beach area you visit at any point throughout the year. Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta and the Similan Islands are all set on the Andaman Coast with the best time to visit these islands during what is known as the dry season which runs from November to April. At this time skies are clear, seas calm and the risk of rainfall low. The Andaman Coast wet season occurs between May and October and is characterised by occasional heavy rainfall which, in turn, leads to an increase in humidity and rough seas. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Pattaya and Hua Hin are all located on the Gulf of Thailand. These places experience a longer dry season which lasts from December to August and a shorter the wet season from September to November. Both wet and dry seasons have similar weather characteristics to the seasons experienced by the Andaman Coast.
