The immaculately preserved Ottoman town of Safranbolu is home to a glorious collection of around eight-hundred half-timbered Ottoman merchant houses dating from the 19th century. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Safranbolu was once located on the major trade routes that criss-crossed the Anatolian plateau – the riches of which can still be seen in the stunning mansions funded by the wealth that was created. Explore the town’s cobbled streets – Market Street, with its old houses, Shoemakers Street and the 350 year old Cinci Han, a resting house for travelling merchants, are particular highlights or travel north to visit Amasra on the Black Sea coast.
