San Francisco and the Winelands of Napa

This relaxed journey blends the best of the Bay Area with the bucolic winelands of Northern California. For many, San Francisco remains USA’s most elegant city and, with full three full days, there will be ample time to fully experience it. Ride the world-famous trams, hike the hills, see Alcatraz prison and visit one of the many excellent museums and galleries. A day trip along Highway 1 to Monterey or Carmel could also be made. Crossing iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the second half of the journey is all about good food and fine wine. Wallow in the hot springs of historic Calistoga, stop for lunch in Yountville and end in Napa, enviably located in the heart of the region’s finest vineyards.

Itinerary: San Francisco and the Winelands of Napa

Day 1 UK to San Francisco

Depart the UK and fly to San Francisco arriving in the afternoon. On arrival make your own way into the city to your hotel which will be your base for the next four nights. Originally settled by the Spanish, the discovery of gold in the nearby Sierra Nevada hills led to the development of San Francisco into one of region’s most important Pacific coast cities. With its picturesque hills, delightful Victorian homes, lively wharves, first-class restaurants, museums and art galleries, the island of Alcatraz and the art deco Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is the quintessential Californian city. Days 2 - 4 San Francisco

Over the next three days you are free to explore San Francisco under your own arrangements. Famed for its fog and colourful 1960s hippie counter-culture, visit Pier 33 and take the ferry to Alcatraz then have lunch in a crab shack at Fisherman’s Wharf or in one of the eateries of the Ferry Building. Despite its steep hills, San Francisco is best explored on foot but do take one of the famous old cable cars. Remember to stop at Lombard Street, ‘the most crooked street in the world’, Coit Tower for stunning views and the hippie district of Haight-Ashbury. Further afield, you may also wish to follow Highway 1 on a day trip south to visit the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, excellent aquarium at Monterey or charming, upmarket Carmel. (N)

Day 5 San Francisco to Calistoga – 75 miles

This morning leave your hotel, collect your rental car and begin your journey north crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. On the far side of the Golden Gate you enter beautiful Marin County and, before heading on to Calistoga, you may wish to stop in charming Sausalito with its pretty harbour, colourful houseboats and fabulous views back to San Francisco. From here continue on to Calistoga where you will stay for the next two nights. (B)

Day 6 Calistoga

A charming town in Northern California’s winelands, historic Calistoga is best known for its geothermal hot springs and proximity to some of the best wineries in Napa, Lake, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Relax with a spa treatment or a mud bath, enjoy lunch or dinner in one of the many excellent cafes and restaurants or visit some of the relaxed local wineries. (B)

Day 7 Calistoga to Napa – 27 miles

After a leisurely morning, leave Calistoga and begin the drive towards Napa. Stop on the way in the delightful wine-country town of St Helena to browse the art galleries and shops, then continue on to picturesque Yountville. With its award-winning restaurants, elegant boutiques and laid-back vibe, this former stagecoach town is a lovely place to while away an afternoon. Leaving Yountville, drive on to Napa where you will stay for the next three nights. (N)

Days 8 - 9 Napa

Set at the southern end of Napa Valley, over the next two days explore the town and the surrounding region. Head to the Vintner’s Collective where twenty-five small wineries are housed under one roof or travel outside of the town to visit a selection of the district’s leading vineyards. Further afield, the wineries of Sonoma are also a short drive away. The town of Napa itself also has plenty to offer with numerous wine bars, bistros and upmarket restaurants. (N)

Day 10 Napa to San Francisco – 50 miles/ San Francisco to the UK

This morning leave Napa and return by road to San Francisco and the airport. Here return your car and catch your return flight to the UK. (N)
