New England Holidays

A pocket-sized region located in the far north-eastern corner of the United States, New England has played an integral role in the foundation of modern America. The six historic states that make up this region – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont – have plenty in common but the university city of Boston, with its colonial era homes, world-class museums and leading restaurants, is undoubtedly the region’s focal point. During your New England holiday head out to the pretty fishing villages of Cape Cod, take a ferry to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, spot whales off the coast and eat some of the finest seafood and clam chowder in the country. Known throughout the world for its spectacular autumn colours and fall foliage, the region’s forested, mountainous interior also offers plenty for those looking for outdoor adventure.

The best time of the year to travel to New England is between April and October. The spring months breathe new life into the region; the weather is warm and sunny and the landscape is dotted with wildflowers. The temperatures start to rise during the summer months which are arguably the best time to visit the region’s beaches and islands as well as enjoying hiking trails and outdoor activities. September and October are also fantastic months for a New England road trip where visitors can witness the dramatic fall foliage. It is the perfect time to explore the contrasting landscapes of this charming region as a plethora of leaves turn from green to amber and crimson and the air cools from the hot summer months. New England in the fall holidays also brings a greater chance to watch whales from the shoreline.

What to do in New England

Uniquely individual but with plenty in common, New England’s six states offer a wealth of places to visit which provide a glimpse into the region’s diverse history, culture and scenery. Massachusetts is home to several must-see places including Boston, charming Cape Cod and the picturesque islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. To the south lies the small states of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Both steeped in history, visit the Gilded Age mansions of Newport or the characterful towns of Mystic or Essex . Further north, Maine boasts the lion’s share of New England’s coastline as well as the breathtaking Arcadia National Park. Whilst in Maine, go whale watching, visit the quaint fishing villages that line the coast and savour some of the country’s best seafood. To the east you can explore the charming mountainous and lake scenery of New Hampshire and discover the white clapboard villages of rural Vermont. Whilst on a New England self-drive holiday, we recommend visiting at least three states in order to experience their individuality and all they offer.
