Itinerary: Self-Drive: Islands of New England

Today, begin your journey by boarding your international flight to Boston. On arrival you will collect your hire car from the airport and drive to your centrally located hotel. Pedestrian friendly and easy to explore, spend the rest of the day ambling through historical Boston at your own pace. Wander along the freedom trail, spot contrasting architecture or sample culinary delights at Quincy Market. (N)

Check out of your hotel this morning and drive around 1.5 hours to Newport, a popular summer retreat in Rhode Island for locals, which hosts a lively and welcoming boating and yacht scene. Spend some time today cruising through Newport’s lavish streets, sprinkled with opulent mansions and grand 18th century houses, with many representatives of America’s gilded age. Carry on until you reach Ocean Drive, an area of exquisite natural beauty where you can enjoy a variety of walking trails. (N)

This morning you will travel by ferry to Block Island. Block Island offers simple pleasures and a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. This afternoon you might choose to visit Old Harbour, a pretty coastal village complete with quaint doll-house style buildings. (N)

Today is free for you to enjoy Block Island at your leisure. You might choose to stroll along the golden sandy shores that stretch for miles, bike through the rolling farmlands, visit the various lighthouse points on the island or relax as you spot various species of birds whose habitat is along the island’s coastline. This morning you will board the ferry back to the mainland and drive for around 2 hours until you reach Falmouth, located on the Cape Cod peninsular. Cape Cod is an area of sheer natural beauty where you will find miles upon miles of stunning coastline, rolling sand dunes, an abundance of outdoor activities and pretty seaside villages. If you are travelling between the months of May to October, you might want to join a whale watching tour. If you are lucky, you might spot the various species of whales that migrate to these waters to feed. (N)

Falmouth is an attractive town that’s surrounded by beautiful beaches and makes for a fantastic base to explore the delights of Cape Cod from. Today is free for you to explore the island at your own pace. You might choose to head to Edgartown where you can browse the delightful array of boutique shops and pretty harbour. This morning you will travel by ferry to Nantucket Island. Later, you might choose to explore the beauty of this charming island at your own pace. From the cobblestoned Main Street to the picturesque beaches and lighthouses, admire the impressive yachts that bob in the harbour and learn about the island’s rich history during your stay here. (N)
Accommodation in Nantucket: White Elephant Hotel (or similar)
Today you will travel by ferry to shore, then drive for around an hour until you reach Plymouth, a quintessential New England town. Best known for being the first colony of New England, its fascinating native history, Pilgrim story and the iconic Plymouth Rock landmark; Plymouth is a great spot between Cape Cod and Boston to explore. Accommodation in Plymouth: Above the Bay at Thornton Adam’s House (or similar)
After breakfast, check out of your country inn and begin your 1.5 hour journey back to Boston International Airport. When you reach the airport, drop your hire car off and board your international flight back to the UK. (N)
Today you will arrive back into the UK, where you will continue your journey home. (N)
