Western USA Holidays

Encompassing the states of Nevada, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, this expansive and sparsely populated region remains an isolated frontier land. Barren flatlands, prominent Native American history, remote mining settlements and spectacular red-rock landscapes evoke images of the American west. However, this is also a region of top-secret bases, alleged extra-terrestrial life and the dazzling entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas. For many, the national parks are a major draw and from Arizona’s majestic Grand Canyon and Monument Valley to the stunning geology of Utah’s Zion National Park and the wind-sculpted vivid-red sandstone of Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, the landscapes are extraordinary. Perfect driving country, travel lonely roads and historic highways through pioneer towns and under big skies back to civilisation and the neon lights and lavish casinos of the ultimate desert city, Las Vegas.

The climate in the US Western states of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Utah is generally hotter and more extreme than California. The autumnal months of September and October are one of the best times to visit Western USA where the hot temperatures have dropped from the height of the summer creating perfect conditions for hiking and sightseeing. Late spring is also a great time for a Western USA trip. Temperatures during April, May and June are often similar to autumn and visitors can witness the wildflowers and lush grasses come into bloom in the valleys and out on the desert plains. It is also a great time to explore the national parks where there are far fewer visitors. July and August experiences extreme heat, especially in desert-like places such as Las Vegas, whereas the winter months bring cold temperatures and an abundance of snow and some closures of parks and roads.

What to do in Western USA

Western USA is a vast and incredibly diverse region. The states of Nevada, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico boast twelve spectacular national parks between them – we highly recommend visiting at least one during your stay. From Utah’s wild and dramatic parks including Zion and Bryce Canyon with their massive monoliths cascading waterfalls and terracotta-coloured hoodoos to the world-famous Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona which is renowned for its mile-deep canyon that has been chiselled by the mighty Colorado River. The parks offer a great opportunity for hiking as well as biking, kayaking and canyoning – perfect for adventure enthusiasts. In addition, a Western USA holiday wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, Las Vegas. This larger-than-life city promises extraordinary hotels, glamourous casinos, world-class shows and restaurants, and is host to several global superstars. With daily direct flights from the UK, Las Vegas can be enjoyed on its own, or as part of a wider tailor-made Western USA tour.
