When to Visit Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan has a very harsh climate with cold winters and very hot summers but also benefits from a long spring and temperate autumn. From the middle of March into April temperatures steadily increase, as does welcome rainfall, which triggers the blooming of wildflowers across the country. The end of April through to late June is beautiful, warm and dry with clear skies and increasingly long days. This is one of the best times to visit Uzbekistan and a very popular time to travel with cultural sites, especially those in Samarkand, at their busiest.

The months of July and August mark the height of the Uzbek summer. It will be hot, temperatures of 30°C are to be expected, and in the desert areas of the south it is not unheard of for it to reach 40°C. Many of Uzbekistan’s cultural sites are exposed and offer little shade from the sun which, at this time of year, can be very bright and very intense. July and August are also the driest times of year and wherever you are in the country the risk of rainfall is extremely low. If visiting at this time of year, it is important to be prepared for the hot and dry weather.

The weather in autumn is very similar to that of the Uzbek spring. Temperatures slowly fall after the blistering heat of the summer and the intensity of the sun’s rays diminishes too. Days remain long and sunny and, with rarely a cloud in the sky, there is little risk of rainfall making it an excellent time to visit for a touring holiday. Despite the good weather autumn also has fewer visitors too. Towards the middle of November there is a definite chill in the air and by the end of the month winter is unmistakably on the horizon.

Very few international visitors travel to Uzbekistan over the winter months. Although it will be dry, clear and bright it will also be very cold – temperatures in the capital Tashkent and the desert cities of the Silk Road hover just above freezing although it regularly feels much colder than this due to the brisk icy wind. In the mountainous regions that border Uzbekistan it is decidedly more wintry, higher elevations experience snowfall and strong winds, and the mercury can plummet to temperatures as low as -20°C or even -30°C.
