Japan Cherry Blossom Holidays: When and Where to Go

Each spring, as cherry blossoms burst into bloom across Japan, the islands of this archipelago experience a remarkable transformation. Known as sakura, these delicate flowers, fleeting and ephemeral, are extraordinarily beautiful but also have a profound symbolic significance in Japanese life and culture.

Embodying the transient nature of life but also renewal and promise of fresh starts, sakura season is welcomed with great fervour by the Japanese population. Eagerly anticipated and enthusiastically embraced, blossom predictions are followed daily and from March to the close of May admirers congregate daily, pausing to admire what is a breathtaking sight.

Japan has the highest concentration of cherry trees in the world, blooms begin in the south, sweeping northward with sakura found in nearly every park and temple and lining rivers, streets and squares making it easy to incorporate cherry blossom holidays into a wider tailor-made tour.

The Japanese call cherry blossoms sakura and refer to the tradition of viewing, appreciating, and welcoming spring’s flowers as hanami. Tracking the blooms as they unfurl across the country is a hot topic, no less so for foreign visitors as they try to predict the best time for sakura in Japan.

The practice of hanami has taken place for at least a millennium, gaining particular popularity during the Edo period. Today hanami tours draw people from around Japan and the wider-world, families and friends gather to enjoy the blooming trees, gatherings take place throughout the country with picnics and festive food and drink.

Eagerly anticipated through Japan, when exactly is cherry blossom season? As a general rule, for the main island of Honshu, cherry blossom season in Japan runs from early March through to early May. Most sakura festivals also take place towards the end of March. Okinawa’s subtropical climate allows blooms as early as January, while Hokkaido’s northern location sees blossoms into May.

One important caveat to keep in mind, however, is that weather conditions can greatly influence when sakura appear. This is not a one-off event and blossom timings can vary considerably.

Osaka

Generally considered to be one of the very best places for hanami in Japan, head to Osaka Castle Park where there are 4000 cherry trees and where the sakura in Nishinomaru Garden are illuminated at night.

Reachable from Nara, Yoshino is one of the most popular places to view blossoms in Japan with an incredible 30,000 cherry trees blanketing the mountain slopes of this rural corner of Kansai.

Tokyo

Hakodate, Hokkaido

Okinawa

Running from late January in the southern subtropical islands of Okinawa to the middle of May in northern Hokkaido, the main cherry blossom season on Honshu is fleetingly brief, lasting little more than a few weeks between late March and mid-April.
