Itinerary: Barcelona Opera Breaks

Day 1 UK to Barcelona

This morning begin your journey by boarding your international flight to Barcelona. If you’d prefer to travel by rail, there is also an option to take the Eurostar to Paris and then hop on the TGV for the picturesque ride to Barcelona. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your centrally located hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore the city as you wish. You might choose to wander down the tree-lined boulevard of La Rambla, which is arguably the best-known street in Spain, visit the prominent central square of Placa de Catalunya and stop for some pinchos in a traditional tapas bar. Spend the evening at leisure. (N)

Day 2 Barcelona

Today you are at leisure to explore this cosmopolitan Catalonian city. The city’s public transport system is excellent, and the Metro is a very easy and affordable way to get around the city. Barcelona is known for its association with Antoni Gaudi, Catalan’s most famous Modernist architect who is known for his highly individual and unique work. Gaudi’s most poignant, must-see landmarks include the flamboyant Sagrada Familia which even today pushes the boundaries of architectural theory as well as Park Güell which is located on the edge of the city and boasts mosaic-tiled sloping walls, landscaped gardens and spectacular views of Barcelona. After visiting these notable landmarks, you may wish to continue to the district of L’Eixample which is home to bustling restaurants, boutique shops and fantastic examples of the city’s Modernist architecture including Casa Batllo and La Pedrera. This evening enjoy your chosen opera performance at the opulent Gran Teatre del Liceu. (B)

Day 3 Barcelona

After breakfast you may wish to walk to Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. As the historic heart of the city it contains some of Barcelona’s oldest buildings including the medieval cathedral which was constructed between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and features an ornately decorated façade. The cobblestoned streets are lined with bars and restaurants and hidden lanes lead to atmospheric squares. From here you can easily visit the Picasso Museum which houses an extensive collection from the Spanish artist who had a lifelong relationship with the city. Alternatively, you may wish to visit Montjuic, a picturesque neighbourhood located on a hill overlooking Barcelona’s port. As well as enjoying beautiful views of the city, Montjuic is wonderful to explore by foot and boasts a 17th-century castle, several art museums and the city’s Olympic Stadium from when Barcelona hosted the games in 1992. Day 4 Barcelona to the UK

Enjoy your last morning in Barcelona before returning to the UK. Depending on the time of your departing flight, you may wish to visit Ciutadella Park, a green and idyllic oasis in the heart of the bustling city or why not enjoy a final lunch in one of La Barceloneta’s seafood restaurants that line the boardwalk overlooking the sandy beach. Take a private transfer to the airport before flying back to the UK. (B)
