Since the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed with the driving of the ‘Golden Spike’ in 1869 at Promontory Summit in Utah, rail travel and the United States have been inextricably linked. This epic achievement linked the Atlantic and Pacific coast to coast, paving the way for western expansion and settlement. Today the legacy of this pioneering project is a number of long-distance rail routes linking key states and cities whilst travelling through some of the continent’s most dramatic scenery. Amtrak operate all public services in the USA and a train journey can easily be incorporated into part of a longer USA travel itinerary. Trains in the USA are roomy and punctual, day services have seats with plenty of legroom and wide picture windows whilst long-distance routes that incorporate overnight journeys provide comfortable sleeping compartments with private and public bathrooms plus showers. The majority of long-distance trains also have a dining car serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
