A variety of lodging options are offered to guests, all with stunning scenic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. All rooms are decorated in a rich southwestern style, with traditional adobe walls and Sante Fe style architecture. The Salas are either located on the walkway of the ranch, or around the courtyard. The Salas are quaint, comfortable rooms with either two queen-sized beds, a queen or a king. The Salas provide a well-appointed haven to retire to after a day of adventure. The Casitas (Junior Suites) are larger and more spacious than the Salas, with their own fireplaces and a comfortable sitting area. Watch the sun set as you relax with a good book on your private patio at the end of the day. The Haciendas (Suites) are the most spacious and luxurious accommodations offered at the Tanque Verde, and can sleep between two and six people - perfect for larger families or a group of friends. With a private patio, cosy fireplace, table and chairs in the sitting area, a mini fridge and full baths in the bathrooms (some are Jacuzzi tubs), you will have all the amenities to make yourself feel right at home. Bedroom facilities and amenities include air conditioning, alarm clock, hairdryer, heating, iron and ironing board, refrigerator, and tea and coffee making facilities. Delicious, southwestern cuisine is one of the many features that the Tanque Verde is famous for. Three daily meals are prepared and served by the ranch's master chef and his team of experienced cooks. Gourmet evening meals are served in the dinning room, and outdoor barbecues with live Western entertainment at Cottonwood Grove are laid on twice a week. Don't miss out on the breakfast rides on Thursday and Sunday mornings - as you arrive at Old Homestead you will be greeted with a delicious freshly-cooked breakfast to enjoy by the fire, as you take in the breathtaking scenery.

Horse Riding

With a string of over 180 well-trained riding horses, riders of all abilities and experience are assured that they will be paired with a mount matched exactly to them. Each and every day of the year, Tanque Verde's full time experienced wranglers are on hand to give you their expert instruction and lead you out into the Old West, on a scenic journey through the desert mountain trails of Arizona. Lessons in Western Riding are available to riders of all experience levels. Beginners can learn the fundamentals of horse riding including how to mount and dismount correctly, how to maintain the correct posture whilst in the saddle, and walking in a safe manner. Intermediate riders can further explore the principles of riding at a faster pace, plus further develop their riding skills. The advanced rider can take a refresher course in loping, allowing you to enjoy the ranch to its' full potential. Rides at a walking pace can be enjoyed by all guests, regardless of ability. This leisurely adventure provides the wonderful opportunity to get close to the vegetation and wildlife of the Sonoran Desert. If you are keen to experience a slightly more adventurous ride, lope around the ranch with your horse, catching a glimpse of blue herons, swooping hawks and maybe even a bobcat if you are lucky. Each Thursday and Sunday morning, guests can join a breakfast ride into the desert foothills, where a filling breakfast of pancakes, bacon, sausage and eggs will be served on reaching your destination at a breathtaking lookout  - an experience to last a lifetime! Sunset rides through the Sonoran Desert can also be arranged any evening for up to 8 people, for a local charge of $75 per rider. Each sunset ride lasts an hour and a half. A game of team penning is sure to create a sense of competition between your friends, family and other guests. The aim is to guide a herd of cattle through a number of obstacles and into a pen, on horseback. This game can be enjoyed at a walking or a trotting pace, so all levels of ability can participate. If you are visiting the Tanque Verde Ranch during the summer months, rides are likely to take place early in the morning or in the evening, when the weather is cooler.

Guests between the ages of four and eleven can take part in their own riding programme and kids club. Children are taken care of by trained children councillors, who endeavour to engage, educate and entertain them. Of course, horse riding is high on the agenda for the youngsters, and they will ride mainly in the arena. They can also learn how to groom a horse! Other activities include hiking, tennis, swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, running races and much more. The kids' riding programme is split into three groups - the Buckaroos (4-6), the Wranglers (7-9) and the Outlaws (10-12) - although the ages are indicative, the children will be grouped according to riding experience. During the summer holidays, the Tanque Verde offers an involved summer horse camp. Each child will be responsible for their own horse to ride and look after. The care of the horse will include grooming, bathing, feeding and saddling, with the assistance of the friendly counsellors. If you are visiting between October and the beginning of May, saddle up for a fun Picnic Ride on the Friday evening of your stay. Ride the desert trails on horseback before tucking in to a hearty southwest picnic, including burgers and hot dogs.

Activities and Facilities

In addition to horseback riding, a guided hiking programme is offered, with miles of stunningly beautiful trails to explore. All levels of hiking abilities can be catered for, with hiking routes ranging from the level terrain of the Sonoran Desert to excursions up into the Coronado Mountains, at elevations of up to several thousand feet. Alternatively, grab a mountain bike, venture into the desert and try your hand at trail riding. If you fancy getting a little more adventurous, advanced technical riding can also be arranged. An experienced guide will accompany guests on all mountain bike excursions, and will fit you to a finely tuned bike. Back at the ranch, there are 5 tennis courts, three of which are artificial turf and one of which is light at night for guests to continue play once the sun sets. Between October and April, there is a staff tennis pro on site to lend guests a hand with improving their game. Group lessons are offered in the morning, in preparation for an afternoon game of mixed doubles. If you fancy a refreshing dip, head to the indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, or relax in the whirlpools, or the men or ladies saunas. For the little ones, there is a separate wading pool, for them to enjoy a safe splash around. The 1.5 acre lake offers a relaxing fishing experience for both experienced and novice anglers. Tackle and bait are provided, as is fishing instruction if you are keen to learn a little more about the sport. The onsite Nature Centre provides the opportunity for guests to get up close to some of the less approachable creatures that call the Sonoran Desert their home, including spiders, snakes and a large, scary looking beetle, and learn how the severe climate of this part of the world has evolved these fascinating desert fauna. Get creative with Tanque Verde's desert art classes, with weekly sessions ranging from painting the stunning landscapes with watercolours, to charcoal work, pencil sketching and pottery. Check in to the Tanque Verde Spa and rejuvenate yourself after a day in the saddle with a soothing massage or a choice of numerous body treatments, from body scrubs to body wraps. Spa treatments are bookable and payable locally.

Getting to Tanque Verde Ranch

The closest airport to the Tanque Verde Ranch is Tucson International, just a 50 minute drive away, and the ranch will provide transfers for stays of four nights or more. Alternatively, if you are arriving into Phoenix International, the ranch is just two and a half hours' drive away. Why not hire a car and combine your stay with a self-drive adventure in Arizona?
