Guide to Price

The above price is based on two people travelling together and sharing accommodation in low season. The price is only a guide and can vary according to selected airlines, hotels and date of travel. If you wish to travel with your family, friends or on your own we will be very happy to assist you with your arrangements.

The Kara Creek Ranch offers four bedrooms in the main ranch house, each with twin or double beds, and two bathrooms. Adjacent to the main building, you will find a cabin with two en-suite bedrooms. After a day in the saddle, guests gather together in the main ranch house to eat, relax and socialise in the lounge area. A hearty breakfast and dinner is served daily in the main dining area and guests dine together in family-style, so single travellers needn’t worry about feeling at all lonely at meal times. Lunch is usually packed up and eaten on the trail, as you could be quite a distance away from the ranch when hunger strikes at midday. Typical food served at the ranch each evening includes lots of meat (mainly ranch-raised), carbs and vegetables – perfect for refuelling after a hard day’s work.

Horse Riding

The Kara Creek is an authentic working ranch owned by the Snook family and is the perfect choice for experienced riders who are looking for a genuine cowboy experience. Visitors to the Kara Creek Ranch are seen as part of the ranch team rather than guests, so you can expect to get involved with all aspects of the day to day operations of the ranch. You will work as the ranch staff do, so you need to ride at either an intermediate or advanced level in order to participate in all ranch duties and gain the most from this unique holiday experience. Horseback work will involve gathering up the cattle and moving the herds onto pastures where they will graze for the summer or winter. Taking in a maximum of 15 guests at any one time (although there are usually less), you can be sure of a true sense of team moral during your time at the ranch. The Kara Creek Ranch is very popular with single travellers. The horses here (mainly quarter horses with a few paint and appaloosa) are excellent mounts for rounding up cattle and provide an extremely satisfying ride when in expert hands. If you haven’t ridden for a little while though, you will be matched with a horse to sort your riding ability.

Activities and Facilities

As an authentic working ranch, the main activities at the Kara Creek are based around the work that needs doing during your stay. Nothing is staged or put on purely for the sake of the guests – all activities here happen for a reason. During a typical week, you can expect to get involved with rounding up cattle on horseback and driving them on to new grazing pastures, helping out with brandings and lending a hand to build and fix fenced boundaries. The ranch work offered varies according to the seasons. Between May and July, a lot of time is spent branding all the new arrivals that were born during the winter. After branding, it is then time to drive out the cattle to fresh pastures for them to graze for the summer. From the middle of August to November is round up time. You’ll ride out to the pastures where the cattle have grazed for the past few months to round up the herds. Some will be driven to market for sale and the rest will be moved onto a new pasture where they will reside for the winter. With roughly 2,500 cattle grazing across 30,000 acres, there is a lot of heads to round up and a lot of ground to cover, which is why we recommend the Kara Creek Ranch as a superb option for experienced riders. As well as these usual cowboy chores, you may head to town one day to attend a local rodeo or for a beer or two, or spend a little time learning about cooking “Western-style” in the main ranch house. You won’t find any swimming pools, tennis courts or spas at the Kara Creek – after a busy day working, all you will want is a delicious home-cooked meal and a warm, comfy bed. This is exactly what you will get; perfect for recharging your batteries before getting up at sunrise the following day to do it all again.

Getting to the Kara Creek Ranch

The closest regional airports to the Kara Creek Ranch are Rapid City in South Dakota and Gillette in Wyoming.  A transfer service is offered at a cost of $150 per vehicle (round trip). This cost may be shared between other guests that are arriving and departing on the same dates.
