Itinerary: A Short River Cruise Between Saigon and Phnom Penh

Day 1 Saigon to Ban Tre

Today start your short river cruise journey through the Mekong Delta between Saigon and Phnom Penh. Embark on your cruise in the morning from the port city of My Tho. Spend the morning sailing downstream to the Ben Tre province, home to winding waterways framed by emerald palms and twisting mangroves. After lunch travel by local sampan boat to the bamboo groves and fruit orchards of Ben Tre where you will visit local artisan homes to try tea, fruit and honey. Travel back to the ship by horse and cart and keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife which is rich in this area. Back on board, enjoy a presentation on Vietnamese life on the Mekong Delta before welcome cocktails and dinner is served. (L/D)

Day 2 Ben Tre to Con Phuoc Island

After a short cruise upstream, take a coach trip to the green oasis of Gao Giong. Here you will find an incredible selection of water birds and egrets that gather in tens of thousands across the Duong Tharp Muoi, otherwise known as the ‘Plain of Reeds’. Take a rowing boat through the winding canals to see the bird’s principal nesting areas. After lunch, visit Con Phuoc Island on a tuk-tuk tour where you can experience basket weaving and local artisans at work. Also visit a 100-year old Catholic Church before returning to the boat for dinner. (B/L/D)

Day 3 Con Phuoc Island to Tan Chau

This morning explore the labyrinth canal system around the Mekong town of Tan Chau. Stop to visit a traditional Taoist temple where you have the opportunity for the monks to read your fortune. Continue past the riverside villages surrounding Xe Loi and get to know the local’s way of life including agriculture and fishing. After lunch continue towards the Vietnamese-Cambodian border, and during border formalities you have the option to enjoy a tour of the working ship or fruit carving classes on deck. Enjoy a wonderful local dinner on deck this evening and watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand. (B/L/D)

Day 4 Tan Chau to Phnom Penh

After a final breakfast and farewells, disembark the ship in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. You may choose to explore this riverside city at leisure today. Get to know the country’s harrowing history and visit the Choeung Ek killing fields and Toul Sleng Genocide Museum which recounts the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime. Other highlights of Phnom Penh include the Silver Pagoda, National Museum, mystical Wat Phnom and the French-built Royal Palace.
