South Africa is the perfect self-drive destination. With its long coastline, mountainous interior, vast deserts and impressive wildlife reserves there is no better way to explore the country than by road. Cosmopolitan Cape Town, with its breathtaking setting and relaxed vibe is the ideal base to visit the world-class vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Cape Point and the penguins of Boulder’s Beach. For many, however, it is the region east of Cape Town that is synonymous with self-drive South African holidays. Known as the Garden Route, a series of spectacularly beautiful roads extend 300kms to the Eastern Cape bordering stunning coastlines and a rugged interior home to idyllic rural towns and protected nature reserves. Neighbouring KwaZulu Natal is also blessed with great natural beauty including the Drakensburg mountain range and historic battlefield sites of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift which are easily reached by car from Durban. In the north of the country, vast Kruger National Park offers one of the finest wildlife experiences in southern Africa and a chance to see the ‘big 5’.
