At sea level the temperatures in Malaysia can range from 21°C to 32°C whilst on higher ground it is much cooler with temperatures between 15°C to 25°C. On the west coast the wet season, which runs from April to October, usually brings thunderstorms in the afternoons, but these are brief and often a welcome way to reduce the humidity. Malaysian Borneo sees its wettest weather between November and February. The east coast tends to have a heavier wet season but beach stays can be enjoyed the year round because each coast has its wettest months at alternate times of the year. All of our tours to Malaysia can be tailored to your exact requirements and we will also be delighted to offer our advice on all elements of your holiday.

December – March

One of the best times to visit Malaysia is between December and March where most of the country is basking in sunshine and very little rainfall is expected. The west coast islands of Penang and Langkawi are at their very best with blue skies and an average temperature of 30°C, with similar weather expected in Kuala Lumpur and Malacca. The exception at this time of year is the east coast where the north-east monsoon blows and brings stormy weather with high levels of rainfall. The east coast island resorts will begin to open at the end of March. Borneo should be avoided in December, January and February due to the monsoon season.

April - May

April and May are good months to visit Malaysia, especially along the east coast where sea conditions are perfect for snorkelling and diving. The west coast including Penang and Langkawi are still great to visit in April as are Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands, however as May hits, the south-west monsoon starts to blow over bringing rain showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. April and May are great months to visit Borneo’s Sabah with dry sunny days making jungle walks and spotting orangutan excellent experiences. It is also a great time of year for Sarawak, especially for trekking in Mulu National Park and Batang Ali.

June to August

The summer months between June and August are peak season for the east coast including Tioman Island. With an average temperature of 30°C, skies are blue and sunny and snorkelling and diving conditions are excellent. Whilst the Lowlands, Highlands and Kuala Lumpur receive some rainfall, it tends to be short tropical showers in the afternoon. The monsoon continues along the west coast where downpours will become heavier towards August. June, July and August are excellent months to visit Borneo, especially to see orangutan as they forage during the fruit season. It is also great for diving around Gaya Island and turtle egg laying.

September to November

From September to November, the weather on the west coast will improve and by November Penang and Langkawi return to their glory with sunny, dry days and good sea conditions. The east coast mirrors this and at the end of September the high winds and heavy rains will start, marking the beginning of the north-east monsoon season. September remains a good month to travel to Borneo and comfortable temperatures and minimal rainfall make it a great time to climb Mt Kinabalu. October sees the start of the wet season across Borneo, and increased rainfall and thunderstorms can be expected throughout November.
