Deep South Holidays

There’s nowhere on the American mainland that has such a strong and distinct identity as the region that makes up the Deep South. Conjuring images of smoky blues and jazz bars, finger-picking country music, barbecues and cook-outs, Bourbon distilleries, cattle ranches and antebellum homes, the southern states offer easy living and a chance to experience a hospitality that is legendary. The region shares many cultural traits and traditions but none more so than music. Many of the Deep South’s cities and locations have played an integral role in the evolution of American music and a visit to some of these are essential on a holiday in the Deep South. The Deep South states also boast spectacular natural landmarks and scenery, from dramatic mountain peaks and cascading waterfalls to driftwood-strewn beaches and balmy wetlands.

Good Times

The best time of the year for a Deep South road trip is between March and May. The spring months are a great time to visit as the weather is warm and sunny and the nights are pleasantly cool. With wildflowers in bloom in March and April, it is a great time for nature lovers and bird watchers, and May is arguably the best time to visit the region’s beaches and islands. September and October are also great months for a Deep South holiday where the high summer temperatures have cooled and the dramatic fall foliage starts to appear. September is also packed with several festivals including the Taste of the Bayou in Alabama and the Kentucky Bourbon Festival. We would recommend avoiding travel to the Deep South in July and August due to the high humidity and intense heat that the southern summer brings.

What to do in Deep South

This eclectic region is synonymous with music and we would recommend incorporating at least one musical city within your Deep South tour itinerary. Nashville is the home of country music, Memphis heartland of the blues and location of Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate, New Orleans is famed for its jazz and zydeco, and Austin in Texas has over 200 live music venues. For those interested in history, visit antebellum homes in Natchez, experience Cajun and Creole culture in Lafayette and explore the country’s largest historical landmark district in Savannah. Space enthusiasts should head to Houston’s excellent NASA Space Centre, shoppers to downtown Dallas and beach lovers to Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia. There are also fantastic outdoor destinations in the Deep South such as the dramatic Great Smoky Mountains, natural hot springs in Arkansas and swamps of Louisiana.
