Route: Paro – Jele Dzong – Jangchulakha – Jimilangtsho – Simkota – Phajoding – Thimphu

This seven night itinerary is an excellent introductory, non-strenuous, trek in Bhutan. The trek can also be used as a base from which to further explore this little-visited country with possible extensions, at its conclusion, by car to Punakha, Gangtey and central Bhutan. An amazing place, there are few countries in the world like Bhutan and the Druk Path Trek will not only introduce you to the renowned friendliness of the people but also the chance to experience the more remote parts of this little-inhabited country at first hand.

ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS

Paro, in western Bhutan, welcomes the majority of travellers to the country. Visit Drukgyel Dzong then hike to Taktsang Monastery with its perilous location 900m above the valley floor.

One of the more popular hiking routes, the Druk Path trek offers a wonderful introduction to the natural beauty of the country with its wooded valleys and spectacular mountain views.

Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan and where the royal family reside. Highlights include the National Library and National Institute for Zorig Chusum which teaches Bhutan’s traditional arts.

Itinerary: Druk Path Trek from Paro to Thimphu

Day 1 Arrive Paro

Arrive into Paro where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. An attractive, predominately agricultural, valley in the far west of Bhutan, Paro is particularly scenic with pretty homesteads, dzongs and temples framed by snow-capped mountains. Later, depending on the time of your arrival, visits could be made to Drukgyel Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang, Paro Dzong or the national museum which houses a fine collection of thangkas. (L/D)

Day 2 Paro – visit Taktsang Monastery

Today hike to Bhutan’s most famous and instantly recognisable site – Taktsang Monastery. The hike today serves two purposes as not only is Taktsang a fascinating place to visit but the climb today will also help you to acclimatize to the altitudes you will encounter during your forthcoming longer trek. Taktsang – also known as ‘Tiger’s Nest’ – is spectacularly located 900 meters above the valley floor perched on the edge of a cliff and is a major Bhutanese pilgrimage site. (B/L/D)

Day 3 Paro to Jele Dzong (8kms – 3 hours)

This morning leave Paro and start the trek with a short climb up to Jele Dzong and the camp. There are beautiful views back over the Paro Valley, if the weather is clear, whilst above the camp is Jele-la Pass and Jele Dzong. (B/L/D)
