Khiva consists of two parts, the outer town, the Dichan Kala, previously protected by a wall and the inner town, Itchan Kala, containing many ancient monuments and buildings.
For thousands of years a city of trade, scholarship, culture and religion, the historic centre of exotic Bukhara contains hundreds of well-preserved, architectural monuments.
One of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia, Samarkand has preserved its ancient heritage and handicrafts generated from its location on the trade route from China to the Mediterranean.

Today you will take a guided tour of Ichon-Qala in Khiva where highlights include the Kunya-Ark citadel and the Tosh-Khovli Palace, residence of the Khan, which had been preserved intact along with its ornate gates. Ichon-Qala successfully displays the simplicity and monumentality of medieval architectural forms, the elegance of woodcarvings, and skilled ornamentation. The fortress's powerful clay walls and towering minarets give a clear indication that it is a typical Central Asian feudal city. (B)
