Where will 2024 take you?

Author: Charlotte Boswell

A month-by-month guide of our favourite destinations for 2024

We have put together our top destinations and experiences for the year ahead and hope these inspire you to travel in 2024 and beyond.

1 January - India

Traditionally dressed ladies in Rajasthan

From awe-inspiring temple complexes and impressive national parks to timeless rural communities and spectacular abandoned cities, India is a rich panorama of life untouched by the passing of time. This magnificent, and sometimes mysterious, land is one full of colour and diversity and, as such, there is something here for everyone – from a first-time visitor to a regular returnee. Despite its vast size, as a general rule the ideal period within which to visit the subcontinent is from late September to early April although there are plenty of regional variations which serve to make India a year-round destination. Nevertheless, January is one of the best times to be in India with most of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bengal, central and southern India and Kerala warm, sunny and settled. For those heading to India for the first time, there is no better introduction than the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur which can be extended to include other areas of Rajasthan. For the return traveller there are a whole host of different regions to discover but particular favourites of ours for 2024 include the exceptional historical sites of Karnataka and the Deccan Plateau, the temple cities of Tamil Nadu, the State of Gujarat with its rich textile and handicraft culture, and East and North East India with its mix of river cruising, wildlife and indigenous villages.

Go for: Cultural immersion, incredible cities, wildlife and rural life

2 February - Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka
Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Set off the southern tip of India, the tropical tear-shaped island of Sri Lanka is one of our top destinations for 2024. After a challenging few years, a settled Sri Lanka witnessed a considerable rise in both interest and travellers as 2023 progressed and, if forward bookings and enquires are anything to go by, we fully expect this positivity to build further over the next twelve months. With its tropical climate Sri Lanka can be visited throughout the year, however, for the areas most people visit the travel period to aim for is between October and March, with January and February the absolute best. As a destination Sri Lanka really does have it all. As befitting an island, there is a long and beautiful coastline and an excellent selection of lovely boutique beach hotels. The wildlife offering, especially with regards to birds, is exceptional and there are a plethora of excellent national parks to discover. From the leopards of Yala and the swimming elephants of Gal Oya to Udawalawe, Minneriya and little-visited Wilpattu, it is simple to incorporate wildlife into a holiday. Inland, forested hills rise dramatically to the tea plantations of the Central Highlands where rolling green hills shelter charming towns, beautiful accommodation and first-class walking. Further north again, lies what is known as the ‘cultural triangle’. This region is home to multiple Buddhist sites, many of which are UNESCO protected, with highlights being the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, rock fortress of Sigiriya and frescoed cave monastery at Dambulla.

Go for: Wonderful wildlife, tea plantation retreats and ancient Buddhist sites

3 March - South East Asia

Vietnamese rice paddies

Perfect for travel during our winter and springtime, South East Asia is a diverse region of ancient sites, bustling cities, paradise beaches and tropical jungle, providing a well-trodden yet intrepid path of discovery. From the extraordinary temples and untouched countryside of Cambodia and Laos to Vietnam's compelling history and spectacular landscapes and Thailand's paradise islands, the countries that make up this charming region can easily be combined or visited independently. South East Asia is also a great destination for wildlife and culinary holidays with many immersive experiences on offer. One of our favourite trends for 2024 is river cruising, something that is synonymous with South East Asia. Unhurried and exploratory, river cruises offer the unique chance to experience a country from a different viewpoint and the opportunity to visit remote or inaccessible places. Whether you are looking for a classic journey on the mighty Mekong, or something more adventurous such as a cruise down North Vietnam’s Red River where you will encounter seas of green rice paddies framed by limestone karsts and riverside temples, Pettitts Travel would be delighted to assist.

Go for: Crumbling temples at sunrise, boutique river cruising and paradise islands

4 April - Morocco

Marrakech souk

Awash with mystery, colour and spice, the North African jewel of Morocco will truly awaken your senses. After a very difficult year due to September’s earthquake, locals say travellers coming to Morocco is the best way to support recovery, making it one of our favourite destinations for 2024. Just a short flight from the UK, the exotic nation of Morocco has plenty to offer the discerning traveller; from the blue-washed town of Chefchaouen and the labyrinth of souqs selling spices, shoes and silver in Fez, to the towering dunes of the Sahara and the Roman remains at Volubilis. Mesmerising Marrakech will always hold a special place in our hearts and is perfect for a long weekend or as part of a longer tailor-made journey through this alluring country. The enchanting Jardin Majorelle offers a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city with beautiful botanical displays and Art Deco and Moorish architecture that packs a pop of colour, or the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century landmark that is home to stunning stuccos, mosaics, paintings and landscaped gardens.

Go for: Starry Saharan nights, bustling souqs and artistic riads

8 August - Canada

Lake Morraine, Alberta

Spectacular scenery, diverse wildlife and warm hospitality – just as BBC’s ‘Race Around the World’ perfectly demonstrated – Canada is another of our top destinations for 2024. Western Canada will always be a beloved favourite of Pettitts Travel with the region offering travellers once-in-a-lifetime experiences; go bear watching in the Great Bear Rainforest, kayak on glacier-fed Lake Louise, spot orcas off the coast of Victoria, enjoy a foodie tour in Vancouver or ride the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer. Alternatively, we are seeing growing popularity for the Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and well as the Atlantic Coast’s Newfoundland and Labrador. Canadian airline WestJet are launching a seasonal service between London Gatwick and St. John’s in Newfoundland in 2024, with a travel time of only five hours. Not only does the province boast colourful fishing towns, thousands of years’ old icebergs and exquisite seafood, it is also known for its exceptional wildlife viewing and is home to 22 species of whale and dolphin, has a high moose and bear population and provides an amazing nesting ground for seabirds.

9 September - Greece

Milos, the Cyclades

Birthplace of democracy and philosophy and enshrined in mythological mystery, Greece conjures up images of crumbling ancient ruins, whitewashed island towns, picturesque coastal villages, and aquamarine seas, truly offering something for everyone. The Greek government has recently set out its five-year development plan for tourism which focuses on adding more year-round flights and expanding the shoulder season, focusing on promoting the country’s rich gastronomy culture as well as lesser-known destinations and islands. Our Peloponnese road trip is a favourite for 2024 – steeped in mythological and historical charm, take an 11-day self-drive journey through this remote region visiting two spectacular ancient sites, Mycenae and Epidaurus, as well as staying in coastal villages such as medieval Monemvasia and pretty Limeni. Island hopping is another trend for the new year, and there is nowhere better to do this than in the Cyclades with frequent ferry services connecting islands. Visit timeless classics such as romantic Santorini, other-worldly Milos and picturesque Paros, and explore less-visited gems including Folegandros, Syros and Sifnos, known for it’s gastronomic heritage.

Go for: Cyclades island-hopping, ancient history and an exciting food scene

10 October - Georgia

Gergeti Church

Snow-capped high mountains, fresco-adorned monasteries and medieval towns, a cosmopolitan capital and being the world’s oldest wine producer all add up to make Georgia one of the most diverse, and interesting, holiday destinations for 2024. Whilst Georgia’s popularity is steadily increasing, it is currently a great time to go as visitor numbers are still relatively low and provides an affordable option for UK travellers. Nestled in the heart of the Caucasus region, this pocket-sized country is full of outstanding vistas, ancient history, and intriguing culture. Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia for over 1,500 years, perfectly combines the old with the new and boasts charming homes, narrow alleyways, baths and cathedrals. It is the perfect place to begin your Georgian trip and has a great infrastructure to explore the country’s surrounding regions. Other highlights include exploring the wineries and vineyards of Telavi – the birthplace of wine, visiting historic monasteries such as Gergeti or Gelati and sampling Georgia’s diverse cuisine which reflects past influences from Central Adia, Europe and the Middle East.

Go for: Dramatic monasteries, pristine countryside vistas and wine tasting

11 November - South Africa

South Africa
Elephants in the Kruger

Known as the ‘Rainbow Nation’ and located at the southernmost tip of the African continent, South Africa is vibrant, young at heart and spectacularly beautiful. Not only is it just two hours ahead of the UK with direct flights to both Cape Town and Johannesburg, the British pound is also very strong against the rand, making it a very attractive destination to travel to in 2024. South Africa’s Western Cape is one of our favourite places, home to the country’s most cosmopolitan city, award-winning vineyards, a jaw-dropping coastline and picturesque rural interior, the Cape is a fantastic destination in its own right. Explore Franschhoek’s exquisite wine farms such as Babylonstoren and Boschendal framed by mountain peaks, visit the penguin colony of Boulder’s Beach, drive the Garden Route which is described as one of the world’s most beautiful coastal drives and enjoy whale watching in Hermanus. Elsewhere, repeat visitors may be interested in exploring less-visited KwaZulu-Natal, known for the famous battlefields and dramatic Drakensburg Mountains, or those wanting a classic safari experience can easily incorporate the Kruger with any South African holiday.
